A torn disc, also referred to as a herniated or ruptured disc, is a spinal condition in which a disc develops a tear and exposes the inner soft core. With the exposure of the jelly-like core, nearby nerves or the spinal cord may become compressed. As disc degeneration occurs, the anatomy of the spine becomes compromised and may cause various crippling symptoms. This condition may arise in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar region of the spine.
Causes of a Torn Disc
Although there is no main cause of a torn disc, there are few leading factors that can lead to this condition.
- Trauma: Injuries sustained from traumatic accidents or sports activities may lead to a torn disc.
- Age: As one ages, natural degeneration occurs and can contribute to a ruptured disc.
- Obesity: Excess weight can compress discs and may lead to this condition.
- Family History: If there is a history of spinal conditions within the family, there may be a greater risk in developing this condition.
Symptoms of a Torn Disc
Symptoms of this condition may vary with each patient. Below are some of the leading symptoms of a torn disc:
- Neck and back pain
- Muscle weakness
- Localized pain
- Muscle spasms
- Numbness and tingling
We strive to thoroughly diagnose and treat each patient with the utmost care. After a comprehensive consultation, our board-certified physicians will create a specialized treatment plan based around the patient’s condition, medical history and needs. Initially, we start every patient with a conservative form of treatment. Conservative treatments may include medication, hot and cold therapy, physical therapy and injections. If symptoms persist, our physicians may recommend our minimally invasive spine surgeries. We offer the leading spinal decompression and stabilization procedures. Depending on the severity of the condition, we will then determine which procedural route would be most effective.
