Slipped Disc
A slipped disc, also referred to as a herniated or bulging disc, is a spinal condition in which the outer wall of the disc becomes punctured and the inner core is exposed. As the soft core leaks out, this can place pressure on the surrounding nerves or spinal cord. This condition can appear in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar region of the spine.
Causes of a Slipped Disc
There is no single cause of a slipped disc, only a few factors that can contribute to this condition. A slipped disc can be caused by the following factors:
- Age: Discs can be subject to natural degeneration over time and may lead to a slipped disc.
- Injuries: Traumatic accidents and sports can lead to injuries that could alter the structure of the spine and cause this condition.
- Weight: Excess weight can place pressure on the spine and result in a slipped disc.
Symptoms of a Slipped Disc
As the soft inner core becomes exposed, it may lead to a variety of symptoms. Here are some of the leading symptoms of a slipped disc:
- Numbness and tingling
- Muscle weakness
- Chronic pain
- Muscle spasms
- Headaches
- Localized pain
